Istanbul hub in cruise tourism

According to industry data and officials, Turkey is solidifying its position as a critical hub in global cruise tourism as passenger numbers reach record levels globally and demand continues to rise around the Mediterranean. The Cruise Lines International Association says, the number of cruise passengers worldwide hit an all-time high of 37.2 million in 2025.

The association’s most recent Cruise Industry Status Report states, growing fleet capacity and consistent customer demand will propel the number of cruise passengers worldwide to 38.3 million in 2026 and almost 42 million by 2029.

Demand for cruises drives growth

Strong demand in the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, and Mediterranean areas is driving industry growth; in 2025, 5.96 million people will travel across the Mediterranean alone. The area saw a 3.4% yearly growth, highlighting its ongoing significance as one of the top cruise destinations in the globe.

“This confirms the strength of the market and the importance of Istanbul as a homeport for Mediterranean itineraries,” said AROYA Cruises President Sture Myrmell.

Istanbul Port

Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, is becoming a major homeport in the Mediterranean cruise network thanks to infrastructure improvements and its strategic location connecting Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

According to Myrmell, the Mediterranean travels are crucial for global development, and Turkey plays a significant role in this strategy. Myrmell observed what he called a “new dynamic” between Turkey, the Gulf, and the Mediterranean.

“Türkiye’s success both as a destination and as a homeport market further strengthens its role in the Mediterranean,” he told Anadolu Agency (AA).

Connectivity is crucial

He claimed that Istanbul’s accessibility to Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf is a major benefit, particularly for cruise customers coming from Gulf markets.

“Türkiye has continued to be an attractive destination for passengers from the Gulf region for many years. This, along with Galataport’s homeport capacity and the allure of its waterfront area, creates a strong foundation for cruise itineraries that connect Gulf demand with the Mediterranean.”

He mentioned that on June 6, AROYA Cruises will begin seasonal operations in Istanbul, providing seven-night cruises that depart from the city. “These routes place Türkiye at the center of the journey and add value to the broader Mediterranean experience,” he said.

Galataport

Myrmell emphasized the importance of the cutting-edge Galataport, which he claims played a vital part in Istanbul’s development from a popular tourist destination to a potent Mediterranean cruise homeport.

“Galataport supports the entire ecosystem by combining modern cruise infrastructure with direct access to one of Istanbul’s most attractive waterfront areas. The port combines cruise infrastructure with retail, dining and waterfront experiences. Guests do not just transit through Istanbul but make it a direct part of the reason for choosing the itinerary,” Myrmell said.

According to him, Galataport enhances Istanbul’s function as a hub where international cruise excursions start and finish and helps Turkey’s standing as a major cruise destination. Myrmell stated that they had a favourable outlook for the rest of the season based on the booking and occupancy statistics.
