Türkiye is in top three non-EU destinations for European travellers. According to data published by Eurostat, Turkey was one of the top three tourist destinations for EU citizens traveling outside the bloc in 2024.
According to the number of travels made by EU citizens outside the EU, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Switzerland were the top three destinations, according to Eurostat on Sunday. Approximately 1.2 billion journeys and approximately 6 billion nights away from home were made by EU citizens in 2024, with a total of 618 billion euros ($713 billion) spent on travel.
Nearly 73% of foreign travel by EU citizens took place within the EU, with the remainder travel occurring outside the bloc, according to Eurostat. In 2024, the top non-EU travel destinations were the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Switzerland.
Just 13.1% of all journeys made by EU citizens abroad went to locations outside of Europe. Asia accounted for 4.2%, the Americas for 4.1%, and Africa for 4.5%.
According to Eurostat, EU citizens’ choice of international travel destinations is still heavily influenced by proximity, with close or neighbouring states typically being favoured.
With 10.7% of all international travel, Italy was the most popular destination for EU citizens, closely followed by Spain at 10.4%.
