The charming Turkish town of Turunc – One traveller’s discovery

The discovery of Turunc

On Turkey’s southwest coast, close to Marmaris, lies the picturesque village of Turunc, which boasts breathtaking views of the sea and mountains.

Even though my first journey to Turunc was thirty years ago, I can still clearly recall it. I was crammed into a car with four coworkers I had just met during my first (and only) season as a Christmas representative. The last part of the two-hour drive from Icmeler was a rise in the pitch-black night that seemed to stretch on forever, leaving behind the lights and activity of the resort town.

Glimpses of the dazzling expanse of Marmaris could be seen at hairpin bends, growing farther away as we ascended, as if we were taking off in a little aircraft. After making one more turn, we eventually raced across a plateau to start the drop. Suddenly, 1,300 feet below us, Turunc appeared as a scattering of lights.

Holiday rep in Turkey

Turkey was still regarded as rather adventurous at the time, especially outside of the major resorts. After a wild summer vacation in Kalkan, a charming former fishing village that was gradually being transformed into a small resort, I applied to be a holiday representative and ended up somewhere completely different: a patchwork of fields and whitewashed houses, chickens scuttling across back yards, and a long arc of gently shelving beach backed by a mix of cafés and more rustic restaurants, catering to the sailing crowd that crossed from Marmaris and the few tourists staying at Turunc’s modest hotels.

The scene that emerged the following morning was breathtaking, with the red-roofed homes matchbox-sized against the enormous mountains behind the town, albeit it couldn’t compare to the splendor of Kalkan‘s old town.

I drifted away from Turunc after that summer, and it continued to be neglected in terms of new hotels while other Turkish destinations flourished. Since my stay in the town, I’ve returned to Turkey at least once a year, although I’ve always preferred to travel to new places rather than familiar ones.

Turunc’s Perios Beach Hotel

Then I learned about the addition of the adult-only Perios Beach House last year. With stylish rooms with immaculate linens and understated cream decor, a green pool terrace with a view of the sea, and a beach club with cabanas and cocktails, it appeared to be everything Turunc had been missing. After thirty years, it seemed appropriate to go back, so my husband, Mark, and I travelled there in October. October is my favorite season in Turkey, when the light is at its most beautiful, the holiday crowds have left, and the people who have spent their summer pouring drinks and running plates are at their most laid-back and amiable, eagerly counting down the days until the season ends.
