Four of Spain’s top clubs will travel to Turkey for a six-day competition in February for the 2027 Spanish Super Cup, which will take place in Istanbul.
The competition will take place in the Atatürk Olympic Stadium from February 2–7, 2027, the Spanish Football Federation said on Thursday. The four teams who will fight for the trophy are Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Atletico Madrid.
In one semifinal, Real Sociedad will play Real Madrid, and in the other, Barcelona, the reigning champion, will play Atletico Madrid.
The competition, which has recently been held in Saudi Arabia, has temporarily moved to Istanbul.
Due to a scheduling issue with the Asian Cup, which Saudi Arabia is scheduled to host in January and February of 2027, the 2027 competition could not take place there.
Before choosing Istanbul, the Spanish federation, in collaboration with SELA, considered a number of offers. According to reports, Miami and Qatar were among the places taken into consideration.
After Saudi Arabia and Morocco, Istanbul will be the third nation outside of Spain to host the Spanish Super Cup.
Atatürk Olympic Stadium
One of Turkey’s most well-known football stadiums, the Atatürk Olympic Stadium is located in the Başakşehir area of Istanbul and has a capacity of roughly 77,500.
Two Champions League finals have taken place in the stadium: Manchester City’s victory over Inter Milan in 2023 and Liverpool’s thrilling comeback against AC Milan in 2005.
After a number of years in the Middle East, its selection places the Spanish Super Cup in a prominent European context.
Since the 2019–20 season, the competition has been played as a four-team Final Four event that brings together the Copa del Rey and La Liga winners and runners-up.
As a result, the Super Cup is now televised in 150 countries, making it a significant international event.
Barcelona is the reigning Champions
After defeating Real Madrid 3-2 in the 2026 final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Barcelona will go to Istanbul as the reigning champions.
Vinicius Junior and Gonzalo Garcia scored for Madrid, while Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski scored twice for Barcelona.
Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup for the second time in a row and a record-breaking 16th time. Real Madrid will play Real Sociedad, and Barcelona will now play Atletico Madrid in the 2027 semifinals.
Another El Clasico on Turkish soil would result from a Barcelona-Real Madrid final, although both teams would need to win their semifinal games first.
Spanish football
The Super Cup’s expanding global impact and financial significance to Spanish football have been emphasized by the Spanish federation.
The competition’s earnings assist clubs in both the men’s and women’s divisions at various levels, contributing to Spain’s larger football system.
The federation can continue to reach a global audience while navigating the competitive 2027 football schedule by moving the 2027 edition to Istanbul.
The competition gives Istanbul, a city that has made a name for itself as a frequent host of top European competition, another significant international football event.
