As the busiest airport in Europe, Istanbul Airport surpasses London-Heathrow. After Istanbul Airport (IST) was named Europe’s busiest airport in July 2026, London-Heathrow Airport (LHR) declared that the “case for expansion has never been clearer.”
Heathrow Airport stated on August 11, 2026, that the construction of a third runway “will ensure the country gets the infrastructure it needs to stay competitive” and “deliver all-important economic growth.”
According to Heathrow’s most recent passenger statistics, 7.859 million passengers used its terminals in July 2026—a 1.5% decrease from the previous year.
Abdulkadir Uraloglu, Turkey’s Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, declared on August 9, 2026, that 8.15 million passengers passed through Istanbul Airport in July 2026.
