The Northern Railway Crossing Project in Istanbul will be undergoing a huge transformation with the help of a $6.75 billion international loan. The Republic of Turkey’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure is carrying out the massive logistics and transportation project known as the Istanbul Northern Railway Crossing Project, which is the country’s largest externally financed railway project.
The major tender for the design and construction of the project’s superstructure and infrastructure will take place on October 14, 2026, according to Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu.
Project Route
Broad Route: The Gebze, Sabiha Gökçen Airport, Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, Istanbul Airport, and Çatalca route will all be included in the project.
Total Length: As part of the project, a strategic line totaling 125 kilometers will be built.
Difficult Engineering: Along the route, there will be 42 bridges totaling 22.4 kilometers and 44 tunnels totaling 59.1 kilometers.
Integration Point: The Halkalı-Çerkezköy High-Speed Train Line, which is being built in the Çatalca region, will be immediately connected to the line.
Logistics and Economics
For the first time in Turkey’s history, Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen Airport will be directly connected by a railway line.
Increased Capacity: By utilizing the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, this new line will significantly increase capacity, simplifying freight and passenger transportation on Marmara and reducing traffic in the city center. After it is finished, it will be able to handle 30 million tons of freight and 33 million passengers annually.
Intercontinental Bridge: By fortifying the continuous commerce route between Asia and Europe, it will improve Turkey’s standing as a major hub in international logistics.
