According to data from the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI) there was an increase of passengers using Turkish Airports in 2024.
After assessing the data, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu wrote a statement highlighting last year’s impressive growth stating “While we serve 95.3 million passengers on domestic lines and 134.7 million on international lines in one year, a total of 230.2 million passengers, including direct transit passengers, used our airports. There was 7.5% increase in total passenger traffic compared to the previous year.”
Minister Uraloglu also collected data for both domestic and international routes as well as cargo that was carried during 2024 from just the month of December.
He stated that “A total of 15.56 million were served, including direct transit passengers. Our passenger numbers increased by 8.2% compared to the same month in 2023.”
He added that “The amount of cargo carried at our airports reached 380.912 tons in December, including 65,111 tons of domestic lines and 315,802 tons of international lines.”
The minister reported remarkable aviation activity, with domestic flights recording 902,078 landings and take offs and international flights accounting for 866,779 throughout 2024. The total of aircraft traffic, including over flights, soared to 2.29 million, marking an impressive 5.5% increase compared to 2023.
Minister Uraloglu also evaluated figures recorded throughout December and the rest of 2024 on passenger traffic in Istanbul Airport, Turkey’s largest airport.
He stated that “A total of 6.2 million passengers were served at our Istanbul Airport, 1.13 million on domestic flights and 5.08 in international flights. The passenger traffic this month increased by 6% compared to the same month in 2023.”
He added that “A total of 79.98 million passengers were served, 17.09 million on domestic lines and 62.9 million on international lines. Compared to 2023, there was a 5% increase in total passenger traffic.”
Sabiha Gökçen Airport has demonstrated remarkable growth, with data revealing substantial increases in passenger traffic, especially in recent months. This surge has propelled the airport into the ranks of Europe’s top ten busiest air hubs at times, highlighting its importance as a key gateway for both domestic and international travel.
Air traffic in major tourist hubs across the country, including Antalya, Izmir, and Bodrum, has shown strong positive momentum, according to recent data. These popular destinations collectively served over 60 million passengers, reflecting their growing appeal among both domestic and international travelers. Renowned for their stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and world-class amenities, these cities continue to drive tourism and bolster the nation’s aviation sector. The increasing passenger numbers highlight the enduring popularity of these hubs as top-tier travel destinations, contributing significantly to the country’s economic growth and global tourism profile.
