Kyrenia is a beach resort and a market hub. A castle stronghold from the 12th century stands on either side of its horseshoe-shaped harbour. The remnants of a ship from around 300 BC, which was found in 1969 around 0.5 miles (0.8 km) offshore, are kept safe in the castle.
