The decision to prolong the highly anticipated Ramadan break to nine days has delighted and excited both locals and professionals in the tourism industry. It offers residents a longer time to unwind and gives the travel and tourism sector new life.
During an iftar event in Ankara, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared the extension, saying, “We have provided our public servants with a comfortable nine-day period to enjoy by adding Tuesday’s half- day and Monday to the holiday.” This choice begs the question of what effect the longer vacation will have on the travel industry and how much it will cost the public.
Experts in the tourism sector predict that the longer break will significantly boost the industry and jump- start the season following the slow months of February and March. Additionally, the fact that the holiday falls in April has brought attention to cultural tourism on a national and worldwide scale.
“Online searches surged immediately following the announcement of the extended holiday,” said Gökhan Sivrikaya, CEO of Neredekal. Since the start of Ramadan, the most searched-for locations have been Bodrum, Fethiye, Antalya, Marmaris, and Cappadocia. Bungalows and all-inclusive hotels in particular are popular in searches, while guesthouses and apartments are the best options for individuals on a tight budget.
