As part of a three-day visit to Türkiye’s capital, Ankara, Prince Edward met with President Erdoğan behind closed doors at the Presidential Complex within the city. Initially there to raise awareness of the impact that non-formal education has on the minds of young people, the British Prince will attend a reception marking the 40th Anniversary of the Chevening scholarship program.

The itenarary has also seen Prince Edward lay a wreath at the Mausoleum of the Founder of the Turkish Republic, as well as visiting the Basilica Cistern Museum in Istanbul. Located in the South West of Hagia Sofia the museum is one of the most important cultural assets, with it’s 80,000 ton water storage capacity and a history that dates back to the Roman Emperor Justinian 1. It was used to distribute water to the great palace and met the city’s need for water over hundreds of years. It became a museum after a grand restoration in 1987.

Whilst there the Prince got an opportunity to learn about the Cistern and it’s historical importance, from Mahir Polat, one of the City’s top officials. Much is to be learned in general from past practices, especially with water management which could be put to use in today’s society to help with present-day challenges.

A visit to Hacettepe University in Ankara was also accompanied by the UK Ambassador to Turkiye where in the Civil Engineering department they were introduced to an award winning recyclable housing project which won an International prize in 2020, is part of the Low-Cost Housing Lego System Project and shows a collaborative example of research between UK and Turkish Higher Education facilities.

In addition, the Prince also visited Kabataş High School and met with students who are participating in the International Duke of Edinburgh Award Program which helps to inspire young people to reach their goals and celebrate their achievements.

Wishing to develop further ties with Turkey in terms of trade and defence, it’s not the first time that a British Royal has visited the country – the Prince’s late mother Elizabeth 2nd was also there in 2008 and before he left the Prince received photos from her visit including a copy of her signature in the guest book.
