In 2026, Turkey Plans to Introduce its First Domestic High-Speed Train. The 2026 Presidential Annual Programme states that as part of its railway indigenization initiatives, Turkey plans to introduce nine domestic electric train sets and a high-speed train next year. The primary objective for the upcoming year is to increase the proportion of locally produced content in important components by designing and manufacturing rail system vehicles for transportation utilizing domestic resources and methods.
The programme includes manufacturing all kinds of rail system vehicles and sub-components, as well as maintenance and repairs, as well as research and development (R&D) of local production capabilities. Public procurements will help domestic rail system manufacturers, and the new programme will promote design and research and development.
To address the demands of the railway industry, Turkish railway vehicle manufacturer TÜRASAŞ is working on domestic vehicle design and prototype. A maximum speed of 225 kilometers per hour (140 miles per hour) is possible for the prototype of Turkey’s first domestic high-speed rail. Next year, the project will be finished.
Nine homegrown electric train sets with top speeds of 160 kph (99 mph) are also being developed. Additionally, about thirty national electric mainline locomotives will be supplied by TÜRASAŞ. Prototyping will start after design work for a Co-Co-type locomotive project and a railway maintenance vehicle is finished.
In order to reduce costs and environmental impact, the 2026 plan places a high priority on rail and sea transportation while guaranteeing energy efficiency in the transportation and logistics industries. In order to support the continuous electrification of railroads, the number of electric traction vehicles will increase.
The construction of an electric high-speed train factory in the northwest had already begun by TÜRASAŞ. Located in the Sakarya province, the facility will be up to 15,000 square meters (about 161,460 square feet) in size, capable of producing 12 sets of high-speed trains, and is projected to generate $83.1 million annually for the local economy.
