As the number of Cruise passengers into Turkiye increases significantly year on year, it’s no wonder that investment companies are looking to capitalize on demand with a new $32 million port proposed for the area of Fethiye.
Set to become the second largest cruise hub, after Galataport in Istanbul, Yenikapı will be expected to serve around 120,000 passengers from 120 cruise liners by 2030 it will have an area of 27,000 sqm along with a 50m wide quay which will allow ships of up to 360m in length to dock on both sides.
Having attracted over 1,393,000 already between January and October 2023, which is a 51% increase on last year, the Cruise Industry is proving to be a critical source of income for Tourism in general which itself is on course for record numbers this year too.
In recent years, Fethiye has grown in popularity as a tourist destination, yet it has managed to retain its authentic charm with its blend of ancient ruins, stunning natural scenery, and modern amenities. The town’s history stretches back to ancient times when it was known as Telmessos. Its lineage is evident in the well-preserved ruins and historical sites, such as the Hellenistic theatre and the Tomb of Amyntas, which are significant landmarks. This Lycian rock tomb, carved into a cliff face, is a stunning example of ancient architecture and offers insights into the town’s rich past.
Moreover, Fethiye serves as a gateway to explore the numerous islands and inlets along the coast. The 12 Islands, accessible by daily boat tours, provide a perfect opportunity for swimming, snorkelling, and relaxing in secluded bays.
