Situated in the Efeler district of Aydin, the Ancient City of Tralleis, which dates back to the 3rd century BC, is finally due to open to the public this August after undergoing excavation since the year 1996.
Aydin Adnan Menderes University Archaeology Department Faculty Member and Excavation Director Prof. Dr Murat Cekilmez will lead a team of 15 archaeologists, 10 technical experts, 30 students and a number of scientists to continue unearthing and preparing the historic site throughout the year.
The ancient city covers a large 150 hectares containing a number of structures. There is a temple, a stadium, a theatre, a church, a necropolis (cemetery) as well as an acropolis (upper city).
