23 Turkish Universities make it into the Top 500 Worldwide of the “QS Europe University Rankings 2026,” further solidifying their standing on the global scene.
The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) claims that the Turkish higher education system is succeeding at a rate never seen before. Turkish universities have already surpassed a number of their European counterparts in the most recent QS metrics, following impressive achievements in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2026 World University Rankings by Subject.
There are presently 103 Turkish universities listed in the European rankings, including 36 recently added establishments. Turkey is now the second most represented nation in the European higher education scene, a historic achievement brought about by this surge. Turkey has now overtaken the long-standing academic systems of Germany, France, Italy, and Spain in terms of institutional representation.
Middle East Technical University (METU) remains the pinnacle of Turkish academia, ranking 116th out of 958 universities from 42 countries. By achieving the top scores in academic reputation, employer reputation, and international research network indicators, METU was able to maintain its position as the national leader.
Istanbul Technical University, ranked 124th, Boğaziçi University, ranked 153rd, Bilkent University, ranked 182nd, and Hacettepe University, ranked 199th, join METU in the esteemed top 200.
With a significant presence across the top 500, the momentum is still very strong. Istanbul University reached 226th, followed closely by Ankara University at 244th. Gazi University was ranked 286th, and Yıldız Technical University was ranked 264th.
As the eighth-largest host nation for international students worldwide, Turkey has cemented its status as a top global destination for higher education in addition to its growing academic rankings.
The number of international students in the nation has dramatically increased, from just 70,000 ten years ago to roughly 350,000 today, according to a recent report by the Federation of International Student Associations (UDEF) and the ILKE Foundation.
This expansion is in line with a strategic national goal to accommodate one million foreign students, which is fueled by Turkey’s exceptional educational system and distinctive “human-centered” cultural approach. According to the survey, these students—61% of whom are enrolled in public colleges nationwide—continue to be most motivated by religious affinity and educational excellence.
