According to a top official on Monday, Turkey’s major aviation hubs have recently set new marks for the most passengers they have welcomed in a single day.
On Monday, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, the minister of transportation and infrastructure, declared that record-breaking passenger traffic had been recorded at Istanbul and Antalya airports, which he claimed had the largest passenger capacity in Turkey.
“On July 26th, Antalya Airport broke the record for the highest number of passengers served in one day, with 225,118 passengers. On July 27th, Istanbul Airport reached an all-time daily high with 272,132 passenger movements,” Uraloğlu said in a written statement.
He gave details about Antalya’s passenger counts on the specified date, stating that there were about 21,770 domestic and 203,348 international passengers arriving at the airport. It exceeded the previous record of 223,217 passengers set on August 3rd of last year, he said.
Additionally, he said that Antalya Airport had 143 domestic and 1,074 international flights that day. “With a total of 1,217 flights, last year’s record level in aircraft traffic was also matched,” he added.
Also, Uraloğlu said that the volume of travellers at Istanbul Airport on July 27th, 2025, was a first for the airport. “With 272,132 passenger movements on July 27th, 2025, our airport reached the highest daily passenger number of all time. This also became the highest number of passengers handled by a European airport in a single day,” he said.
In April, Istanbul Airport, which was the second-busiest airport in Europe the previous year, started operating three runways simultaneously. With this infrastructure, it surpassed the United States as the second-largest airport in the world and the first in Europe to have three runways.
According to the General Directorate of State Airports (DHMI), the airport was the largest and second busiest in Europe in 2024, with almost 80 million passengers.
According to the 2024 Annual Traffic Report from Airports Council International (ACI) Europe, it also emerged as the busiest air cargo hub in Europe last year. Istanbul Airport regularly ranked first in Europe for daily flights, according to weekly data from the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation.
However, Antalya Airport also grew by constructing new terminal facilities earlier this year, which could assist increase the number of passengers served at this airport in a well-known vacation destination.
