Turkey, amongst other things, is very well known for and very popular for its coffee so it should be no surprise that they’ve got a festival purely for this beverage, which celebrates the journey from the bean to the cup, whilst also offering tasting sessions, workshops, exhibitions and good music!
Coffee is one of the world’s most consumed drinks and according to Alper Sesli (Festival Director), ‘Coffee Festivals are actually considered one of the world’s largest lifestyle events’. The first festival will be held in Bodrum, after which they will travel to Izmir, Diyarbakir, Ankara and Istanbul.
Turkey’s coffee culture is one of the oldest in the world (the first coffee house here opened in 1550’s), and even though Tea is drunk more that coffee now, there’s still plenty of speciality roasters, different brewing rituals and serving rituals that you can experience right across the country. This festival is designed to honour the old traditions, as well as welcome the newer technologies in order to increase consumption again, especially with a ‘younger’ audience.
Any coffee bean maybe used in the making of Coffee throughout Turkey, though the preferred option is those from the Arabica family, and it’s made with very finely ground beans. Traditionally brewed by boiling, the grounds are also usually left at the bottom of the cup, as a means of telling your fortune!
The Bodrum festival will kick off on the 6th May, and will last three days also featuring live music from Kerem Gorsev Trio, Fatih Erkoc and Gaye Su Akyol.
