Wishing to further represent and express the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish Nation, President Erdogan kick started a campaign back in January to re-name the country from Turkey to Türkiye. Türkiye is the name for the country used in their language already, and now they want to carry the name over onto the International scene.
The exact timing of the change, which will be present across all branding, exports, Venues, Airlines, products, passports and visas, is not known yet but the transition is technically already underway and plans are being put in place as to how go about this monumental task.
A letter has already been sent out by the Turkish Confederation of Tradesmen and Craftsmen asking for Global Business Support, all public institutions will be encouraged to use the new name moving forward and officials have also contacted representatives from all the major social media channels regarding the change.
Global reactions have been pretty muted, but there has been a mixed response in Türkiye itself, with supporters calling it praising the effort to be more aligned with their traditional values, whilst opponents have condemned the move, as a way of distraction from other things happening throughout the country.
Anna Murphy from inews (www.inews.co.uk) who is a Turkish Resident, actually makes a very good point on the subject, which is ‘In this globalised and connected world, countries should not be forced to alter their national titles for the ease of an English-dominated diplomatic landscape, and the name change should merely be seen as a move for a country looking to be recognised by a more accurate version of its own name’
Türkiye isn’t the first country to change it’s name, don’t forget Mumbai changed from Bombay in the 1990’s, so it’s not as though this is a brand new thing to the International scene, and quite possibly it won’t be the last.
So, for the benefit of this great country – Welcome to Türkiye!
