In the vibrant and culturally diverse city of Istanbul, one event stands out as a beacon of creativity and expression: the Istanbul Theatre Festival. This annual celebration of the performing arts has been enchanting audiences and showcasing the best of international and Turkish theatre for decades.

Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), the festival has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1989 and over the years, it has become a vital part of Istanbul’s cultural calendar, offering a platform for both established and emerging theatre talents to shine.

One of the festival’s key goals is to foster cultural exchange and dialogue through the medium of theatre. By inviting theatre troupes and artists from around the world to participate, the festival serves as a global stage where diverse voices can be heard and understood. This emphasis on cross-cultural collaboration has helped shape the festival’s reputation as a dynamic and inclusive event.

A Kaleidoscope of Performances

This year is the 27th edition of the event, and it’s been decided that there will be over 20 theatre and dance performances from both the domestic and international arena. Audiences can expect a kaleidoscope of theatrical experiences, from classic dramas to experimental avant-garde works, from thought-provoking contemporary pieces to physical theatre and dances.

Notable International Collaborations

One of the festival’s most noteworthy features is its commitment to showcasing international theatre productions. This collaboration with artists and companies from around the world has helped bridge cultural gaps and promote a global understanding of the human condition through theatre.

This year for example the dance section will include pieces by Pina Bausch and Hofesh Shechte, who are both internationally renowned choreographers, whilst the theatre programme will benefit from pieces by Wajdi Mouawad, Familie Flöz, Brokentalkers and Anestis Azas.

Supporting Emerging Talent

In addition to showcasing established artists, the festival takes pride in nurturing emerging talent within the Turkish theatre scene. Young and aspiring playwrights, directors, and actors are given a platform to present their works, often resulting in groundbreaking and thought-provoking productions.

The Istanbul Theatre Festival also hosts workshops, masterclasses, and discussions with industry experts, providing invaluable learning opportunities for emerging theatre professionals. This commitment to fostering the next generation of theatre practitioners ensures the continued growth and evolution of Turkish theatre.

A Variety of Venues & Awards

15 different venues across the city and on both sides of the Bosphorus have been chosen for this year’s event, highlighting Istanbul’s interest in Theatre. These will include the Alan Kadıköy Theater, Atlas 1948 Cinema, Büyük Zarifi Apartment, Caddebostan Cultural Center, DasDas, Fişekhane, Galatasaray High School and Harbiye Muhsin Ertuğrul Stage, to name a few.

Since 1997 the festival has also presented two lifetime Achievement awards to those that have contributed significantly to their art, and to the educational programmes, co-productions, and themes of the event. One is given to a local artist & the other to an International Artist.

Long May it Continue

The Istanbul Theatre Festival is a testament to the power of the performing arts to bridge divides, ignite creativity, and inspire change. With its commitment to showcasing diverse voices, fostering emerging talent, and promoting cultural exchange, this festival has earned its place as one of the most celebrated events on Istanbul’s cultural calendar – long may it continue!
