Turkey has long been the subject of many documentaries and it just so happens that one of America’s most well-respected travel journalists is currently filming a new series here, which will be called ‘The Hidden Aegean’ and will hit our screens in 2023. Peter Greenberg along with his executive director Grady Candler, have already visited Izmir, Bodrum, Cankkale and Dalyan, experiencing many adventures along the way including spending time on the famous Bastarda Boat, and interviewing Blue Cruise Organizer Dina Street.
Leyla Ergil, who regularly writes for one of Turkey’s most popular news channels (The Daily Sabah) was also lucky enough to be approached by Peter’s team, and join him on a few adventures of Köyce?iz and it’s beautiful lake. Leyla is an American expat herself, and now lives in Dalyan having moved over to Southern Turkiye from her home in Los Angeles.
This is not the first time that Greenberg has done a documentary of Turkey, as last year they filmed a series which was entitled ‘Hidden Turkey’. Airing on PBS, Amazon Prime and Apple TV it proved so popular that this new series was commissioned as a result, with a focus on the Aegean. Peter is quite often referred to as the ‘Travel Detective’ and probably his most popular series was ‘The Royal Tour’ where the heads of state in Mexico, Israel and Ecuador carried out extensive tours alongside him, for the documentary.
In her recent article which you can read in full here: (https://www.dailysabah.com/life/expat-life-in-turkey-filming-hidden-aegean-with-peter-greenberg/news) Leyla explains that Dalyan is actually a ‘secret hideout’ for many Brits, and around 40% of the population is boat-owning expats, who regularly visit the highly popular Köyce?iz market and Köyce?iz lake. As she told Peter, the ‘hidden adventures’ here include a 4000 year old rock tomb, the impressive mud baths and the protected sanctuary for the Caretta Caretta Turtles on Iztuzu Beach.
Not only was Greenberg carrying out the filming of the documentary but he was also due to record radio programs whilst he was here and go on air to talk about the on-going situation with the airlines and the airports. It just goes to show how in demand he is, and how popular he is for an American audience interested in hearing more about Turkiye.
It will certainly be interesting to watch the series in 2023, and see what adventures they experienced in the ‘Hidden Aegean’.
