Tea glass building set to boost tourism in Turkey’s tea capital Rize

Turkish tea has always been important in Turkish culture and now there is a building under constructed in the shape of a tea glass. The seven floor building is in being built in the Black Sea province Rize which is also known as the country’s tea district.

Rize is Turkey’s top tea producer and this 30 metre high building will serve as a monument but will also include stores selling goods on each floor. There will be a marketplace which will host a tea museum, teahouses, stalls which will sell cloth, copperware, plus there will be plenty of local cuisine to try. The building will also have a cinema which will show documentires on tea production.

The head of Rize Commerce Exchange, Mehmet Erdogan, told Demiroren News Agency that “it would be the largest tea glass in the world.” Mehmet also stated his sole purpose is to boost the tourism sector in Rize.

“We plan to have everything associated with Rize together in one place, from feretiko (Rize fabric) to hawks (a bird kept as a pet in some households in the province),” he said. “All types of tea produced in Rize will be on sale and we will have six teahouses, each serving different types peculiar to several regions (of the province),” he said.  

Construction is due to be complete by August 2021
