Simultaneous operations to be launched at Istanbul Airport

Istanbul Airport is set to make history on April 17th 2025 by becoming the first aviation hub in Europe to launch simultaneous take-off and landing operations on three runways.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu stated that “We are continuing our works related to the increasing passenger capacity.”

He continued “This system, which we will bring to life in our country, will be a first in Europe.”

Uraloglu stated that “The simultaneous independent triple runway operation will minimize delays caused by operational reasons, maximize fuel savings, and enhance flight efficiency.”

The airport, which opened in 2018 and became operational in 2019, hosted 76 million passengers in 2023 which was a significant increase from its total of 52.75 million back in 2019. The amount of passengers increased to a whopping 80 million last year and it has been reported that passenger capacity is to increase to 120 million by the end of this year.

Istanbul Airport is on track to complete all four phases of its construction and expansion by 2028, featuring a total of six runways to accommodate growing passenger demand. The airport, which has quickly established itself as a global aviation hub, inaugurated its third runway in June 2020.
