What about the history behind it…..
History tells us in 1922 the Turkish War of Independence against allied powers resulted in the dissolving of the Sultanate on November 1st. The following year the Treaty of Lausanne,was signed and from then on the newly formed Turkish Parliament set the foundations for the Republic of Turkey on October 29th 1923, signalling the end of the Ottoman Empire.
And so Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk), leader of the Turkish National Liberation War, was elected to be the first president of the new Republic on the very first day of Independence 29th October.
Turkey, was a main player in the Korean War, and then became a member of NATO in 1952. During the years there have been several military Coups towards the end of the 20th century. During the 1980s, the economy was liberalized, resulting in political stability, and an increase in economic growth.
