Istanbul’s 3rd Bridge over the Bosphorus Strait opens

Yesterday saw the official opening of Istanbul’s 3rd Bridge over the Bosphorus straits by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and over high officials.

Yavus Sultan Selim Bridge is named after the Ottoman Sultan famous for his triumphs in the eastern world.

This phase of the bridge has been completed well ahead of time and is about 1.4 kilometres long and 59 meters in width, making it the widest in the world when fully completed. It will have eight road lanes and two rail tracks, once fully opened all trucks and heavy duty vehicles will be directed to it.

The 126 kilometre highway which is built as part of the Third Bridge and Northern Marmara Highway includes a total of 35 Viaducts and the first phase of this is completed.

The other two phases of construction will involve linking road and highways and amounting to a total of 257 kilometres and should all be completed for usage in 2018.
