Istanbul to host the European Games in 2027

The largest Olympic event on the continent, the European Games, which take place every four years, will be hosted in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2027, according to the European Olympic Committees (EOC). Ekrem Imamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul, emphasised the excitement of the city and referred to the day as momentous for both their sports and the nation.

“We are here at the historic Saraçhane building, in the home of 16 million people, to announce the great news of bringing the 2027 European Games to Istanbul,” he said. “I believe that this great success will be recorded in history not only as a victory for our city but also as a joint victory for our sports community, our country, our nation and our state.”

Imamoğlu emphasised how quickly the talks with the European Olympic Committees have advanced since the middle of 2023 and thanked Spyros Capralos, the president of the EOC, and all other authorities for their kind attention and cooperative manner.

He underlined how important it is to hold such a big athletic event in Istanbul, a city that has made multiple bids for the Olympic Games but has never held a multisport event. The EOC Executive Board unanimously decided to officially declare Istanbul as the host city for the 2027 European Games after talks with the organisation and after persuading several Turkish authorities.

“While we announce this great result to you, the EOC Executive Board is also sharing the same
announcement with the whole world,” Imamoğlu remarked. The official signing ceremony has been rescheduled for the upcoming weeks in light of this weekend’s municipal elections in our nation. Undoubtedly, it takes a lot of cooperation and solidarity to create an organisation this size and significance. We are thrilled to have succeeded in this after putting in a lot of work.”

He emphasised Turkey’s experience and passion for sports by highlighting the nation’s capacity to host a range of sporting events, from the Universiade to Formula One.

“With all our experience and excitement, we have set our sights on the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and objectively speaking, we are a city ahead of all our competitors,” Imamoğlu continued. “I am confident that the 2027 European Games will go down in history as the greatest ever, and Istanbul will bring a lot of value to this unique occasion. For all those concerned, the 2027 European Games in Istanbul will be a huge success.”

EOC President Spyros Capralos highlighted Istanbul’s long-standing dedication to international sports and its thriving sporting culture in expressing his excitement for the city’s successful bid to host the European Games in 2027. The European Olympic Committee (EOC) is thrilled to have granted Istanbul the right to host the 2027 European Games. On the EOC website, he stated, “It is fantastic news for the city and the sportsmen in Europe.

Capralos highlighted Istanbul’s close relationship with sports, pointing out that the city has included sports into everyday life for the good of its citizens. He expressed his belief that Istanbul in 2027 will offer the perfect stage for the best athletes in Europe to display their abilities.

The EOC and the Istanbul team hope to expand the number of competitions that will act as qualifying events for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, building on the success of the Krakow-Malopolska 2023 European Games. With the help of friends and relatives and a passionate local audience, Turkish sportsmen would have the chance to qualify for the Olympics on home ground thanks to this calculated manoeuvre.

Istanbul already has venues that are either built or planned for future events, therefore there won’t be any new building needed for the European Games in 2027. This strategy fits with Istanbul’s dedication o staging important athletic events in a sustainable and economical manner.
