Is Turkey less expensive than the UK? A Brit takes a day trip there to find out. The UK’s cost-of-living crisis is putting a strain on everyone, and many Brits are experimenting with different ways to reduce expenses, one is to become an ex-pat in Turkey. There are many strategies to cut costs at the grocery store, such as gathering coupons or buying food items at a discount.
However, a Brit discovered a completely other method that also worked: taking a plane overseas to do a grocery purchase. The Coupon King, Jordan Cox, traveled to Turkey to restock his shelves.
He disclosed in a YouTube video that he only paid £33.01 for a return flight that was scheduled for the same day. Before returning home, Jordan flew to Antalya to shop for a few hours, carrying only a backpack for his carry-on bags.
After paying 72p for an airport tram to the town center upon his arrival in Turkey, he proceeded directly to A 101, a grocery. A share bag of Doritos, which he claims is normally priced at about £1.75 in the UK, was discovered inside for 59,50₺ (£1).
Jordan ultimately chose to shop at Bim, where he discovered a multipack of Twix for 79₺ (£1.36), a bag of Coco Pops for 130₺ (£2.24), and Haribo marshmallows for 28.50₺ (49p). A multipack of pocket tissues cost 23,50₺ (40p), whereas Oral B toothpaste only cost 99₺ (£1.71).
‘I’ve got two big bags full of food, toiletries, loads of different stuff,’ Jordon exclaimed.
Before boarding his aircraft back home, he even managed to spend some time on the beach. With a few exceptions, Jordan was able to fit the majority of his purchases in his carry-on backpack.
Ultimately, the Brit was able to save a significant amount of money. For instance, Oral B costs £1.71 in Turkey but typically costs about £5.13 in the UK.
His 1.4kg multipack of Coco Pops cost £2.24, which is significantly less than the £3.30 price of 365g in Tesco without a Clubcard. In Turkey, bags of Haribos cost Jordon just 49p, whereas in Tesco, they usually cost £1.25. In the UK, Jordan estimated that the identical purchase would cost £89.38 at Tesco, or £86.18 when using a Clubcard.
‘That seems an awfully high number, and it is, it wasn’t even that much,’ he exclaimed.
However, the astute consumer in Turkey only spent £19.23 overall, plus £15.11 for a bottle of vodka at the airport. When combining the airfare, train fare, and shopping, Jordan spent £68.79 and saved £20.59, or £17.39 when using Clubcard.
