Historic Sumela Monastery in Turkey

The Greek Orthodox Sumela Monastery honours Mary and is situated in Karadağ, in the Pontic
Mountains. It is a city on northeastern Turkey’s Black Sea coast, located in the Maçka district of Trabzon Province. Currently it’s flanked by snow making for a spectacular sight.

Located at an elevation of approximately 1,200 metres (3,900 feet) above sea level and overlooking the Altındere Valley, this place holds immense historical and cultural value. It is also a popular tourist destination in the Altındere National Park. The Sumela Monastery is a gem in Turkey’s crown and is a must sightseeing trip when in Trabzon, Turkey.

The public was prohibited from entering the monastery in September 2015, for a year in order to address the growing number of rock falls. This was eventually extended to three years. On May 25th, 2019, it reopened to tourists. One of the most significant historical and touristic locations in Trabzon nowadays is this beautiful and historic monastery.
