Eastern Mediterranean Cyprus is the heart of historical heritage

Eastern Mediterranean Cyprus

Throughout history, many civilizations have been drawn to Cyprus, an island with a rich history and a key location in the Eastern Mediterranean.  Cyprus has been visited by numerous civilizations, including the Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, and Romans, all of whom left their mark on the island.

Cyprus’s Trade and Power Boom

The Cyprus coast developed as a commercial center starting in the early Bronze Age.  Cities and commercial hubs made it easier to build links with neighbouring nations.  The island saw the arrival of Middle Eastern civilizations during this time.  However, with the overthrow of Persian rule by King Evagoras, Salamis gained commercial power and prosperity.  Throughout the Hellenistic and Roman eras, this economic boom persisted.

The Byzantine Period and the Roman Empire

Cyprus’s trade decreased when the Roman Empire waned.  The Byzantine Empire’s domination, however, rejuvenated Cyprus and brought its cities back to their previous splendour.  Through the reigns of Richard the Lionheart, the Lusignans, the Venetians, and the Ottomans, who later seized control of the island, Cyprus maintained its historical richness.

Cyprus’s in the 19th century and the British

British interest in Cyprus grew after the Suez Canal opened in the middle of the 19th century.  The island developed into a key location to guard trade routes leading to India.  With the construction of new roads, pipelines, agricultural irrigation projects, and railway networks, the British made significant investments in the island.  Cyprus developed into a major trading hub during this time.

Cyprus’s Independence and Northern Cyprus’s History

In 1960, Cyprus became an independent nation.  However, the present borders were established in the Peace Operation of 1974 in response to the Greek Cypriot attack on the Turks in 1963.  Due to its historical and cultural significance, North Cyprus has grown to be a popular tourist destination.
