Didim's Temple of Apollo visitor increase

The ancient and historic Temple of Apollo is located in south-western Turkey in the Hisar district of Didim in the Aydin province. As one of the best-preserved temples from antiquity, it captivates history enthusiasts and travelers alike. Its remarkable preservation and cultural significance have made it a must-visit destination, drawing an impressive 132,740 visitors in 2024 alone compared to the previous year with figures of 11,761.

The Temple of Apollo has been a focal point for archaeological research and restoration since 1905. Originally spearheaded by German archaeologists, these significant efforts are now led by the Directorate of the Miletus Museum, which assumed responsibility in 2024. Recent initiatives have enhanced the site’s accessibility and preservation, including upgraded visitor pathways, reinforced surrounding walls and thoughtful landscaping improvements.

This awe-inspiring structure ranks as the third-largest of its kind in the whole world. Its architectural highlights include a grand inner courtyard, known as the “naos,” where worshippers once gathered. Surrounded by 112 majestic columns, the temple’s design showcases the intricate craftsmanship of ancient times. A standout feature is its courtyard, soaring to an impressive height of 17.5 meters, making it a remarkable testament to ancient engineering and spiritual devotion.

Legend has it that the Temple of Apollo was guarded by the mythical Medusa, a terrifying figure in Greek mythology known for her snake-like hair and petrifying gaze that would turn people into stone.

A number of visitors whom have visited the historic site shared their thoughts about seeing the ancient wonder.

Emre Kurt, an Italian Tourist stated that “We’re thrilled to be here. While similar structures exist in Italy, it’s incredible to see some of them still standing. I’m glad I could show this to my wife.”

“I was really curious about Apollo and I’m happy to visit a place I’ve wanted to see. It’s beautiful to witness so many structures still intact. I’m truly impressed.” This was expressed by Claudia Magnapera, Mr Kurt’s wife.

A Russian woman named Katia Trosnova, whom has been living in Istanbul for the past three years, also visited the temple stating “I’m amazed by the scale and beauty of this place. It’s something I’ve always wanted to experience.
