Karl Bushby, a British traveller who started his adventure 26 years ago in Chile and has been walking his way around the world, has finished the Turkish portion of his tour.
In February, the 56-year-old adventurer resumed his long walk across Georgia and into Turkey. Bushby’s crossing of Türkiye was successfully accomplished when he arrived in Edirne. “Europe will be the last leg of my journey,” Bushby said.
Walking around the world
Bushby emphasized his desire to see the world in all its facets, stating that his next stop on the itinerary will be Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, France, and, lastly, the United Kingdom. The British tourist stated that he intends to keep travelling for around half a year.
Sharing his thoughts about Türkiye, Bushby said, “Türkiye was amazing, a magnificent country, and the people are wonderful. You’ll find some of the best people you could ever meet here. I made many friends in Türkiye. The weather is great, and it’s truly a beautiful country. You have an incredible coastline, and then you move into the mountains. It was very challenging. I lost a lot of weight in those mountains.”
“Turkey is famous for being one of the most hospitable countries in the world. I had heard that from many people. While travelling this way, I met several other travellers who kept telling me, ‘Türkiye will be amazing.’ And they were right. Yes, they were right. The hospitality is incredible. People stop to talk to you in the street, and that’s not something you see in many parts of the world,” he added. Bushby crossed into Bulgaria via the Kapıkule Border Gate to continue his journey.
Where did Bushby’s journey begin?
Beginning in Chile in 1998, Bushby conquered many obstacles, such as walking for over four years across the Darien Gap, a deep jungle area that is thought to be practically insurmountable. After arriving at the Panama Canal, he proceeded to North America.
Before arriving in Alaska, Bushby journeyed throughout Canada, the United States, and Mexico. He walked over the icy Bering Strait into Russia in 2006.
Bushby was arrested in Russia for entering the country without authorization, but he was freed two months later and permitted to carry on with his trip. Despite having to repeatedly take planes out of some areas due to visa problems, he always resumed his journey at the precise location where he had stopped.
Arriving in Turkey
Bushby proceeded across Central Asia and Mongolia until arriving at the Caspian Sea, where he had rest periods and travelled by boat and swimming. The adventurer completed another important step of his incredible journey in February when he entered Türkiye.
