Biggest Urban Park in Turkey

Atatürk Airport National Garden Opens as the Biggest Urban Park in Turkey. In a significant development for urban green space in Turkey, the Atatürk Airport National Garden has formally opened and welcomed its first guests under the theme “The Breath of Istanbul, The Nation’s Garden.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was present at the project’s completion ceremony, which was overseen by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change’s Housing Development Administration (TOKI).  The National Garden presently provides a wide range of recreational amenities and essential infrastructure for disaster preparedness, having opened its first phase previously.

Istanbul locals attended on inauguration day with their families, bringing food, foldable chairs, and kilims. They took advantage of the pleasant weather to enjoy the green space.  Visitors highlighted the area as a new community center by participating in a variety of activities, such as reading, socializing, and youth and children’s ball sports.

The Atatürk Airport (Istanbul Airport) National Garden is Turkey’s largest city park, spanning 1,215,000 square meters of green area and intended to be both a recreational destination and a strategic catastrophe gathering location.  Its emergency assembly space is designed to hold more than 165,000 people at once.

There are nine entrances to the garden, guaranteeing widespread access throughout Istanbul.  A hangar building, cooking rooms, a water reservoir, and renewable energy systems driven by solar and wind power are among the facilities.  For the convenience of guests, there are 19 restrooms spread throughout.

In order to promote varied community involvement, the National Garden also has an exhibition hall, workshops, a soup kitchen, a café, a marketplace, and a public library.  Two structures add architectural and cultural value to 72,128 square meters (17.82 acres).  20,399 trees, 1,182,816 square meters of lawn, and a 28,000-person event meadow are all part of the landscape.

The garden’s seven hills—Sarayburnu, Süleymaniye, Fatih, Yavuz Selim, Edirnekapı, Kocamustafapaşa, and Çemberlitaş all represent important Istanbul landmarks by fusing natural topography with cultural symbolism.  The 2.5-kilometer-long Ab-ı Hayat Stream enhances the site’s visual and environmental value as it flows along the garden’s center axis.  Eighteen greenhouses, nine marketplaces, and a 4,000-car parking lot comprise the supporting infrastructure.

Twelve tennis courts, eleven basketball courts, six volleyball and six football fields, two skating tracks, a 10,679-square-meter bicycle route, an 85,371-square-meter walking trail, an 18,750-square-meter hiking path, and eight kid-only playgrounds are all included in the sports facilities.
