Each year in the region of Antalya in southern Turkey, decorative hand made wreaths are crafted to be displayed in homes during the Christmas and New Year period.

These beautiful wreaths are hand made by the house-wives of Antalya. The work tends to begin at the start of August until the first week of December.

The wreaths are thoughtfully created using natural waste from forests such as pine cones, sandalwood, cypress, myrtle fruit and juniper branches. It has been since the early 90’s that ornamental plant companies have been producing wreaths for people to use throughout the festive season by hanging them on their front door, or as a decorative centre piece for their dining table or some even use them to be laid down in cemeteries for loved ones lost.

Due to the effects of the COVID19 pandemic and with Turkey being a major supplier of ornamental plants, the country has indeed suffered rather dramatically from interruptions in its shipping and transport networks. Still the great advantage is that the majority of the ornamental plants are being delivered to European countries, infact in the past two years the European markets have been moving more towards Turkey and this has shown in their exports. Products are being transported to countries such as the England, Finland, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands.

The head of the Ornamental Plants and Products Exporters Association, Ismail Yilmaz, has stated that “We expect to earn around 2 million USD from Christmas wreaths this year.”
