According to a senior official on Wednesday, airline traffic on both domestic and international flights increased by over 50% in April, resulting in a record 18 million passengers passing through Turkish airports, including transit passengers. According to Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, who cited data from the State Airports Authority General Directorate (DHMI), the amount increased by 53.7% on an annualized basis.
In April, 8.3 million people travelled domestically by air, a 52.9% increase over the same period the previous year. In the same time frame, the number of travellers on international flights increased by 55.1% to 9.7 million. “This month, together with direct transit passengers, a total of 17.97 million passengers were served,” Uraloğlu stated.
According to the ministry, Turkish airports handled 178,614 aircraft last month, including overflights, representing a 28% increase year over year. The main aviation hub in the nation, Istanbul Airport, handled 6.6 million passengers in April, up 48% year over year, he said.
Between January and April, the airport handled 24.2 million passengers, comprising 19.2 million on international and 5 million on domestic routes. This is a 17% increase over the same period in the previous year.
According to the ministry, Sabiha Gökçen Airport, (which is situated on the Anatolian side of Istanbul and is the second busiest airport in the country, handled 19,815 planes and 3.3 million passengers in April) Uraloğlu reported that the airport saw a 59% rise in total passenger traffic compared to the same month in 2023. Domestic passenger traffic climbed by 55%, while international passenger traffic increased by 63%. Based on data, the airport handled approximately 12.8 million passengers in the first four months of the year.
