Professional Athletes race in the 43rd Istanbul Marathon

The 43rd Istanbul Marathon was held on Sunday in the Altunizade neighborhood of the Üsküdar district on the Asian side of Istanbul and finished at Sultanahmet Square on the European side. The Istanbul Marathon is among the most popular marathons in the world and is included in the “Gold Label Road Races” of the World Athletics Association.

The marathon was held in three categories. There was the 42,195 metre run for the professional athletes and the 15 kilometre and the 18 kilometre runs that were open to the general public. Over 20,000 people took part in the events held throughout the day, 54 of those were professional athletes who took part in the professional competition.

Victor Kiplangat from Uganda and Sheila Jerotich from Kenya won the men’s and women’s titles.

Kiplangat finished the 26 mile run in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 18 seconds while Jerotich finished the women’s race in 2 hours, 24 minutes and 15 seconds.

The runners up were Robert Kipkemboi from Kenya who finished just 5 seconds behind Kiplangat and Jackline Chepngeno who was just 6 seconds behind Jerotich.

Competitors who finished in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the men’s and women’s race took home $35,000, $20,000 and $10,000 in prize money.
